Southwest Travel Guidelines
Southwest Airlines has several travel guidelines designed to make the passenger experience smooth and enjoyable. One of the key features of Southwest is its unique open seating policy, where seats are not assigned. Instead, passengers are assigned a boarding group (A, B, or C) and a position (1-60) within that group, allowing them to choose any available seat when they board. This process is determined by when you check in for the flight, which opens 24 hours prior to departure. If you'd like to ensure an earlier boarding position, Southwest offers EarlyBird Check-In, which automatically checks you in and provides a better boarding position, starting at $15. Additionally, the airline has a generous baggage policy. Passengers are allowed to check two bags for free, provided each bag weighs 50 pounds or less and doesn’t exceed 62 inches in combined dimensions. Southwest also allows one carry-on bag and one personal item, such as a purse or laptop, per passenger.
When it comes to changes and cancellations, Southwest stands out with its flexibility. The airline doesn't charge change fees, allowing passengers to modify their reservations without additional costs, although fare differences may apply. If a passenger needs to cancel, they can either receive a refund for refundable tickets or flight credits for non-refundable tickets that can be used for future travel. Southwest also has a no-show policy that requires passengers to cancel or change their reservation at least 10 minutes prior to departure to avoid forfeiting the value of their flight. As for onboard services, Southwest provides free in-flight entertainment, including movies, TV shows, and messaging, and offers complimentary snacks and drinks. Wi-Fi is available for purchase on most flights. Finally, Southwest has a priority boarding option for travelers with disabilities or families with children under the age of six, allowing them to board between groups A and B.
