Thetis
The THETIS Foundation for the protection of underwater cultural heritage was registered in August 2002 as a non-profit organization. It is a follow up of CYSUCH, the “Cyprus Society for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage”.The three basic pillars supporting the realization of the Foundation’s objectives are: Research, Protection and Promotion of the cultural legacy of Cyprus preserved in the sea around the island. The promotion of human activity in relation to the marine environment will contribute to the better understanding of the nautical tradition of Cyprus and the role played by the island in the sea borne trade in antiquity. The collaboration of THETIS with academic and other institutions of the wider cultural spectrum is directed to the awareness of the public towards the protection and enhancement of the underwater cultural heritage. The running expenses of the Foundation as well as all research activities are covered by private contributions. The Foundation is housed in a listed building of the early 20th century in the historic centre of Limassol, a town with a rich nautical tradition.
